eographer Gheorghe Neamu (1935–2021) was a personality known not only in the scientific world, but also by the general public. This is so on account of his participation, as a climatologist‑meteorologist,in the 17th Soviet expedition to Antarctica (1971–1972) and in numerous conferences, symposia, exhibitions, interviews and last but not least, through his books, written in an accessible, dynamic and very pleasant language: Am fost in Antarctica [I went to the Antarctic] (1974); Popasuri pe 6 continente [Stopovers on 6 continents] (1979); Geografia Antarctidei [The Geography of the Antarctic] (1982) winner of the “Gh. Munteanu‑Murgoci” Award of the Romanian Academy, a specialized work, but also with many interesting data for any reader. Since Gheoghe Neamu’s activity stretches over many decades, is extremely rich and several articles have appeared about it, the authors of the current article have decided to present the main stages of his journey to the Antarctic, from Leningrad to Mirnii (the Antarctic), with the vessel “Professor Wiese”. From Mirnii, on the icebreaker „Navarin”, among the icebergs,to the Soviet resort of Molodiojnaia, from where, on board a third ship, “Nadejda Krupskaia”, he returns to the Soviet Union, to the port of Kaliningrad. The journey lasted 178 days, during which it covered more than 70,000 km, touching all the southern continents and all the great oceans of the World. Among the many countries he has visited over the years, Gheorghe Neamu has been to China six times (1973, 1985, 1987,1989, 1992 and 1997). That is why the article includes some data related to these voyages.
