A controversial episode in history and generator of many passionate manifestations and attitudes within both the Romanian and Hungarian ethnic communities, the Austro-Hungarian War of 1848–1849 still contains many obscure areas from the perspective of scientific knowledge. Among the great unknowns of the 1848 Revolution in Transylvania is the aspect of the organization and military training of what was then and now called the Wallachian Army. Was this a real military organization or just a generally disorganized group of partisans? This aspect still arouses much controversy between Hungarian and Romanian historians. The present paper will deal with the issue of the military endowment of the Wallachians in the period 1848–1849. We are mainly looking to identify the firearms used by the Wallachians and the manner in which they could have procured them in that context. Our work started from the observation that very few details are still known regarding the fighting equipment of the Wallachians soldiers.
