Veterinarian Florin R. Begnescu (1880–1949) may be among the most important figures of Romanian beekeeping world from the beginning of the 20th century. Raised in a family where beekeeping became a passion, Florin R. Begnescu inherited the love for bees from his father, teacher Remus N. Begnescu, whose name is related to the officialization of the beekeeping education in Romania and to the emergence of one of the first textbooks in the field, “Course of rational rationalization”. Florin Begnescu advocated in favour of the necessity of establishing a National Beekeeping Society in Romania, which was achieved in 1915. His last work –beautifully illustrated “The Hive Alphabet”, was published in 1944, and received favorable reviews in magazines from the country and abroad. The article discusses Florin R. Begnescu’s contribution to Romanian beekeeping, also referring to the legacy of his paternal grandfather, Nicolae Gh. Begnescu (1824 – 1873).
