Avram Iancu – erou martir al neamului românesc (Avram Iancu–Martyr hero of the Romanian nation)

Avram Iancu was the conscious defender of the national idea,able to support the nation’s cause in front of Emperor Franz Josef and to refuse a decoration from him with dignity, telling him:“We didn’t fight for toys, we want rights, Your Majesty!”, but also to bear the consequences of his rebellion against the oppressors. Avram Iancu is not only the people’s hero, but a legendary personality of the 19th century. His legacy is the Romanians’ unquenchable longing for freedom and their boundless love for their country. Avram Iancu knew glory during his life, having part of a tragic twilight of life. Avram Iancu was buried in Țebea – in the land that gave him wings, under Horia’s gorun – the witness of a turbulent history. This article outlines important aspects of Avram Iancu’s life and the role he played during the 1848 revolution for the rights of the Romanians from Transylvania. It also contains excerpts from Avram Iancu’s holograph will and photocopies of it.
