The history of Romanian radiolocation, a stand-alone weapon in the Romanian Army, has officially lasted for over seven decades, while the history of Romanian radar is only 45 years old. Compared to the history of other weapons, their history is relatively young. However, the achievements are significant, which requires and justifies a retrospective, historical, scientific and technical approach to the development of radiolocation and radar in Romania. The paper addresses the conditions under which airspace surveillance began in Romania in 1913 for the purpose of anti-aircraft defense in order to organize airspace research against air strikes on military and civilian targets. In close connection with the progress of scientific knowledge, the important moments in the development of radiolocation as a scientific and technical methodology and the introduction of radar as a technical system are systematized. Then, the beginnings of radar in Romania are presented, and there are synthesized the achievements in the field of Romanian radar, starting from the 1970s, and current aspects regarding the surveillance of Romanian airspace. The analysis carried out on the publications elaborated during this period highlights the pioneering activity of military personnel, of personalities from research units and education units regarding the introduction of radar and the design and construction of increasingly high-performance Romanian radars.
